Disney’s ‘McFarland, USA’ Movie Review

Disclaimer: I was invited to a complimentary sneak preview of McFarland, USA.

“In the end, the American dream is not a sprint, or even a marathon, but a relay. Our families don’t always cross the finish line in the span of one generation. But each generation passes on to the next the fruits of their labor.”

Last week, Nate (11) was my date to see Disney’s ‘McFarland, USA’.

He got to stay up late on a school night and order a blue slushy. Yup, I’m mom of the year for at least one more week in his book.

From Disney: “McFarland, USA” is inspired by a 1987 true story, in which an unlikely band of inexperienced, under-equipped, young Latino runners with exceptional determination rise to become cross-country state champions under the leadership of their coach, Jim White. Over the years since then, the McFarland High School cross-country teams have won nine state championships and the small school is considered a powerhouse in the sport.

Like the real McFarland team, all seven young actors had to train to become champion runners. Although some had more track and field experience than others, all of them took their drills very seriously. Mark Ellis, the coach hired to train them for the film, would have it no other way and the team evolved over time. But training them wasn’t as simple as merely putting shoes on their feet. Every morning at 8 a.m. the runners showed up for practice, which was literally running and more running to build up endurance.

You know how I love a true story! Kevin Costner’s performance makes me want to drive out to McFarland and meet Jim White. I want to give him a huge hug and thank him for making a difference.

Nate and I both loved the movie. We found ourselves cheering and clapping for the McFarland team the entire time.

The movie speaks truthfully about the hard work these kids do as crop pickers. The movie doesn’t try to make a huge political statement or leave people uncomfortable in their seats; it is just an honest view of their long days, strength, determination, and economic reality.

Now for the important questions: Would I take the other kids to see it?

Yes!

Julia (14) would absolutely love it. There is nothing more heart warming than watching people pour their all into what they do.

I would have no problem with Riley (3) seeing the movie, although I don’t think he would sit still through the story.

I already can’t wait to show it to Brian! I think he will really enjoy it!
