ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY – A FAN-GIRL MOM’S TAKE WITH NO SPOILERS

This review begins the same way that The Force Awakens did – From a little girl who wanted to live with the Ewoks in the forest on Endor, to a mom with four kids, I promise you a review with no spoilers. I want you to have the chance to feel the same magic that I did, sitting in the movie theater yesterday.

When my brother and I were growing up, we had a laserdisc player. We had three movies – Oklahoma, Sound of Music, and Star Wars. We loved watching that movie. I loved everything about the battle between good and evil. I can remember my parents taking us to pick out the next two Star Wars movies. They bought us the box set so that my brother could have the posters for his room. We were fans.

So how am I going to do a review with no spoilers? Because, I believe in the sweet, simple idea of being truly surprised. I believe in taking time for yourself and enjoying a quiet afternoon where a movie takes you to galaxies far, far away.

From the studio:

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Did I like the movie? Yes, I really, really did. I cried.

Was it my new favorite? No. A New Hope remains in first place in my book.

What was my favorite part? (no spoilers, remember?!) New characters. Sometimes, I don’t like when new characters are introduced to a story, but these characters are the foundation of why A New Hope happens. And I love that.

Will I take the kids?

Julia (16) – Yes.

Nate (13) – Absolutely.

(If your kids can watch Lord of the Rings and those battle scenes, then they can watch this, in my opinion.)

Riley (5) – No. We will watch it at home on DVD.

As always, feel free to email me if you’d like more specifics!
