Nate’s request was simple. He wanted an epic nerf gun battle for his 12th birthday.

Grandpa Thompson, Uncle BJ, Uncle Andrew, Aunt Laura, and cousins James and Lily were visiting, so with their help, Brian and Julia set up a fort of awesomeness – made from boxes and spray paint. Over 25 nerf guns were laid out on tables for the boys to choose from. The pizza was ordered and teams were formed. Battle music was turned up and the laughing began.

Two hours flew by and all boys were exhausted.

The day was declared a success and Nate’s birthday party was one for the history books!

The boxes are still out in the backyard. I am wondering if they will actually stay there all summer. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Ten years ago, I would have hurried to pick up the yard as soon as the party was over. I would have stacked the boxes in the garage so that the backyard looked nice again.

Today, I realize that the fort is a little boys dream. He knows that his daddy woke up at 5am to start building boxes and he knows that those boxes can be built and rebuilt over and over to make as many castles as he likes. Today, I will let the backyard look like we are moving in and smile as Riley and Nate spend hours laughing together.

Happy 12th birthday to my precious Nate. I am so glad God chose me to be your mom.

  1. What a brilliant idea! It’s like having giant building blocks. “All boys were exhausted.” That in itself is an amazing accomplishment. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen my sister’s boys exhausted. 🙂 I might have to share this with her. Happy belated birthday to Nate!

  2. The boys were exhausted all of them and even the littlest ones got to play. No children were injured in this epic battle for the ages.
The older ones were terrific and everyone was a warrior that day.

  3. Did you notice the war paint Brian applied. The kids were so excited to choose symbols and let the contest begin. He has so much imagination and creativity.
