My daughter, Julia, will be a junior in high school this coming school year. We are suddenly knee deep in SAT and ACT prep, searching for scholarships, and making lists of schools to visit. Much of this can be done online, and it would be wonderful for Julia to have her own computer. Ideally, this computer would go with her to college, so it needs to be a laptop. She could get used to using it now, and it would be nice for her not to have to wait to use our family computer. (Brian is currently completing his Master’s degree online, so some nights he needs to use it for hours in a row… and mama’s got her blogging to do.)

As a HP Smart Mom and a member of the MyPrintly Creative team,  HP is definitely my computer of choice. I’m always impressed by their customer service and we love our subscription to Instant Ink. HP has a brand new section of computers perfect for college and back to school needs located conveniently at your local Walmart.

The computer she chose is the HP Pavilion x360 Convertible. See?! You can get a convertible when you turn 16!

Here is how HP describes this computer: Seamlessly shift between four modes for an entertainment experience that gets you closer to your screen than ever before.

Product overview
• The laptop will never be the same again: The 360 degree hinge gets you in the perfect position to work, watch, play and go.
• Take it anywhere: Thin, light and great battery life, so your laptop can go wherever you go.

Julia and I’ve been talking about colleges and trying to gather information. We decided the factors to start our initial search would be:

  • Tuition
  • Is her desired degree plan offered
  • Rank Information
  • Distance
  • Website
  • Religion Affiliation
  • Job Placement %

College Worksheet Example

To create the spreadsheet, we did these simple steps:

  1.  We opened a google sheet and entered the information.
  2. The name of the college is on the left column.
  3. Beginning with Column B, the factors are across the top. This will allow us to sort by any of the factors we choose.

To sort, you hover over the column you would like to sort by. A black arrow will appear next to the letter.

College Worksheet Example-1

Click on that arrow and select ‘Sort Sheet A-Z’ or ‘Sort Sheet Z-A’.

Just sitting down and talking through what she was looking for in a college has helped put things into perspective. It’s taken a huge ocean of information and started to organize it in a way that makes sense to us. From here, we can decide which of these universities to visit.

Please feel free to download the template to this spreadsheet by clicking here.

And now it will be time for us to start saving for the next round of college applications!
