When I was little, my family always traveled to Corpus Christi, Texas for Christmas.

Both sets of grandparents lived there. They were friends. My grandmothers were in the garden club together. I had no idea how rare and special it was that my grandparents lived in the same town and were friends.

My maternal grandmother had the most amazing dining room. It was huge. The dining room table could seat more than 24 people. She had a glorious china cabinet with holiday decorations in every drawer. Red velvet carpet made the room seem magical, and I’d spend hours looking at the holiday silver and ornaments that I would find. I’d find the felt Santas and hide under the table studying every detail.

On Christmas Eve, she would give my brother and I money and take us to a five and dime at Five Points. We would each pick out an ornament to hang on her tree after the candlelight service.

When I was in high school, she moved to Houston to be closer to my parents, aunts, and uncles. The tradition changed a little bit, and she would order beautiful, grown up ornaments for us every year. My favorites were these glass poinsettias that were red and gold. With the little ones in the house, they’ve stayed wrapped in bubble wrap for a few years, knowing that there will be a time that I’ll unwrap these and the fond memories of my grandmother at Christmas will come rushing back to me.

When I opened the box of Hallmark Heritage Collection ornaments, they reminded me of the ornaments that she would give us – beautiful, stunning, decadent.

It’s amazing what can trigger a sweet memory, isn’t it?
