Storm Safety and Activity Kit

Keeping my little ones entertained during a storm or power outage is the difference between making fun memories and mediating world war III. When we lived in Texas, our kit was packed with activities that could be done in our bathroom – while we waited for the tornado sirens to stop and the hail storms to pass. In Arizona, the storms are different. Dust storms and monsoons, sometimes followed by power outages, are what we wait out. Even though the storms are different, one thing has always stayed the same in our storm safety and activity kit – Flashlights! And what do flashlights need? Duracell batteries.

The kids usually do OK during the first fifteen minutes, but then the questions start. One of them ends up getting nervous and then the craziness happens. Our kit keeps those little hands and big minds busy while we wait for the storm to pass. We usually end up having a great time and the kids ask if we can sit in the dark the next night. It’s amazing what a little family time can do, huh? Here is a little peek inside our kit:

This kit sits in the pantry next to a case of bottled water and a box of granola bars. And bonus – The kids wanted to share with you one of our favorite storm activities – flashlight tag!

This game has turned into a neighborhood favorite. Slowly, after the storm passes, you can see all the little ones head out into the cul-de-sac to see who is ready to play while we wait for the power to come back on. Little ones with flashlights zoom past us, giggling in the dark, and making great memories.

Do you have a Storm Safety and Activity Kit? What is inside? I’d love to hear.
