The Best Places to Eat in Santa Fe, New Mexico

Every roommate trip involves finding incredible places to eat at our destination. This trip, we relied on yelp and suggestions from Instagram friends (and maybe a few random strangers)! It did not disappoint!

I honestly thought there were two types of Mexican food – Tex-Mex and what is served here in the Phoenix area. (Naive, I know.) Well, I have now been introduced to Santa Fe style Mexican food and I can tell you it is amazing.

I don’t think anything will ever replace my dear Tex-Mex, but I cannot wait to go back and introduce my family to all of my favorite places.

Here is my list of places you must try if you visit Santa Fe, in no particular order.

  1. Rooftop Pizzeria – Great views and just off of the plaza. We tried the Spinach salad and the No. 1 Pizza. The sun dried tomato dressing on the salad was incredible. Everything was so delicious and the perfect start to our stay.
  2. The Shed – Incredible Mexican food, just off the plaza. There was a significant wait, but they had a beautiful courtyard and a full service bar with amazing margaritas. Their sour mix is made with fresh & real lime, lemon juice. Yum. I had cheese enchiladas and steak – this Texas girl’s favorite meal ever. We met the loveliest couple that evening while we were waiting and they suggested the Farmer’s Market at the Railroad Yard the next morning and Tomasita’s.
  3. Tomasita’s – Also incredible Mexican food, closer to the railroad yard. The complimentary sopapillas served at the end stole my heart.
  4. Rancho de Chimayo’ – A beautiful drive, about 40 minutes from Santa Fe. This place was incredible. The venue is absolutely stunning. I felt like I had stumbled on to the movie set for A Walk in the Clouds. The food was absolutely incredible and I loved every minute.
  5. Cafe Des Artistes – A cafe located on Canyon Road. This was the perfect little place to grab lunch. The owner was very kind and the food was all made fresh. We met a different couple (I know… I know.. poor Kelly – my extrovertedness was on overdrive) who recommended the Rancho de Chimayo’ and we never would have stumbled across it. I’m so thankful they mentioned it!
  6. Kakawa Chocolate House – This was recommended by my dear Instagram, Aggie, photographer friend turned real life friend. Oh my word. The chocolate was rich and decadent and such a treat. There was plenty of seating to relax and chat over delicious coffee. This wasn’t a place just to run in and grab something – it is definitely a place to sit and enjoy every bite.

So, let me know what I’ve left out and what I must try next time! Let me know if you visit (or have visited) any of these places. I’d love to know what you think!
