Sunday afternoon, we packed the car and headed north to Woods Canyon Lake, Arizona ~ about thirty miles east of Payson.

We rented a boat for the morning on Monday.

She is so proud to be driving… look at that expression!

Nate the Great caught a trout with his net. Never mind that the poor trout had one foot in the grave and didn’t see it coming…

Little did we know that we would actually get to watch the Discovery Channel from our boat… that is Mr. Hawk taking off with Nate’s trout… Amazing!

Then… Mr. Bald Eagle flew right over our boat.

I imagined Brian stood up and started singing ‘God Bless America’. I told him to sit his booty back down in the boat, because I didn’t want to hear our desert children complaining about getting wet…

But seriously… neither Brian not I have ever seen a Bald Eagle in real life.

I will never forget that moment.

Ms. Chipmunk came out to wave to us.

She was sweet as pie.

See Ms. Blue-Jay over there? She was the deepest, prettiest blue. And she held so still for the photos.

She turned out to be a trail marker…

We stopped at an overlook on our way back to Payson. This is at 7,500 feet.

You really do feel like you are standing on the edge of the world.

Louis L’Amour and Zane Grey both had novels that were set here. At sunset you can see over fifty miles in three directions.

After you see one sunset here, you’ll understand why they sing ‘Purple Mountain Majesty’.
